Sonos 27.1 Compatibility: Which Speakers Get It (S2 vs S1)

# Sonos 27.1 Compatibility: Which Speakers Get It (S2 vs S1) Sonos 27.1 is an app update, not a speaker update — but which app you use depends on your hardware. Here's how to tell whether 27.1 applies to you. ## The short version If you use the modern Sonos app (the one simply called "Sonos"), you get 27.1. If your system runs on the Sonos S1 Controller, you don't — S1 is a separate app for the oldest hardware, and it's on its own update track. ## S2: you get 27.1 The modern Sonos app controls all current Sonos products — Era 100, Era 300, Arc, Beam, Ray, Move, Move 2, Roam, Roam 2, Sub, and everything from the last decade-plus of S2-compatible hardware. If you set up your system with the standard Sonos app any time in recent years, you're on S2 and 27.1 is yours. [Here's how to update](/posts/sonos-271-whats-new). ## S1: this update isn't for you The Sonos S1 Controller exists for the earliest Sonos products: the original Play:5, Connect, Connect:Amp, Bridge, and the old ZonePlayers. If that's your system, keep using the S1 app — it still gets its own maintenance updates, but the Sonos 27 platform (and 27.1) doesn't apply. There's nothing to fix here; your system is simply on a different track. ## How to check which you're on The easiest way: look at the app icon on your phone. If it says "Sonos," you're on the modern app. If it says "Sonos S1 Controller," you're on S1. You can also check in the app under Settings → About, which shows both the app version and your system type. ## Can S1 hardware move to S2? Some older products can be upgraded from S1 to S2, but the very oldest (the ones S1 was created for) cannot — they're S1-only by hardware limitation. If you're unsure, Sonos's support pages have a product-by-product breakdown. Don't try to force the modern app onto an S1-only system; it won't see your speakers. ## What about the desktop and web apps? Sonos also offers desktop controller apps for Windows and macOS and a web controller. The 27.1 changes — the queue fix and the volume knob — are mobile app changes. Your speakers behave the same regardless of which controller you use, but the queue persistence fix specifically lives in the mobile app, so update that to get it. ## Related - [How to update to Sonos 27.1](/posts/sonos-271-whats-new) - [The queue fix, explained](/posts/sonos-271-queue-fix)
